Colorectal Cancer (CRC) starts as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or the rectum. This growth is called polyps but not all polyps are cancerous. Polyps grow in size as well as in number, thereby increasing the risk of them becoming cancerous. If detected early, CRC is not only treatable but preventable. A timely test is required and the polyps should be removed as soon as possible. In the United States, the second-leading cause of cancer deaths IS CRC.

Signs and symptoms of CRC

Though not unique to CRC, a few common signs and symptoms are:

• Blood in or on the stool
• Change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation
• Cramping or abdominal pain
• Stomach discomfort such as bloating or fullness
• Frequent gas pain
• Weakness, fatigue and weight loss
• Constant tiredness
• A feeling that the bowel movement is not emptied completely

Risk factors of CRC

Some people are considered to be at higher risk of developing CRC. They include people with:

• Family history of CRC
• Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
• Already diagnosed with polyps
• Family history of inherited breast cancer, uterine or ovarian cancer
• 50 years of age and over
